MR. BEAN ONCE AGAIN

We all love Mr. Bean. He is so funny! This time we are going to practice the present continuous watching this hilarious sketch. Pay attention to all the questions and sentences that appear on the screen. A funny way to revise what we are learning. Enjoy it!

Monday 14 November 2011

PRESENT CONTINUOUS

The present continuous, also known as present progressive, is very easy to understand. We use it to talk about something that is happening right now. We need the verb TO BE followed by another verb ended in ING. Do you catch it? Have a look at this video about The Simpsons and you can practice a bit more.

POPPY DAY

Today, 11th of November, is a special day for remembrance. Today is Rememebrance Day, also known as Poppy Day or Veterans Day. Many countries around the world honour the ones who died in wars today because on the 11th hour of the 11th day on the 1tth month of the year 1911, the First World War finished. So many people wears a poppy on the lapel of their jackets and it is observed a 2 minutes´silence. Many wars have taken place during our history and unfortunately many wars are still taking place nowadays. It is important not to forget that wars don´t lead anywhere and many innocents die during the conflicts. Don´t forget it!

We remember... And now, two minutes of silence, please...

BONFIRE NIGHT!

Today is the 5th of November, a very popular date in England known as Bonfire Night or Guy Fawkes´ Day.
In 1605 a group of traitors, ruled by a man called guy Fawkes, tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament with the purpose of killing the king James I. They introduced 36 barrels of gunpowder under the cellars of the building, but they were catched and sent into prison. Since then people celebrate that day with bonfires and fireworks displays. Children make a guy with straw and old clothes and go to ask for "money for the Guy". It is also very common to eat jacket potatoes and toffee apples.
If you have a look at this video, you will get a better idea of this celebration.

FUNNY BONES

This cartoon by the BBC "Funny Bones" was very popular in The UK. It is the story of 3 skeletons: a big skeleton, a little skeleton and a dog skeleton. They live in a dark dark cellar, down the dark dark stairs of a dark dark house. This episode is titled "Bumps in the night". Very funny!

THE SKELETAL SYSTEM

As we dedicate our Halloween activities to the skeletons, I think it is a good idea to learn the names of our bones in English. In fact, many names are similar in both languages. Have a look at this video. Despite the presenter´s voice, you can learn many things about our human body and the skeletal system, not only their parts but also how to protect it. Quite interesting!

Tuesday 25 October 2011

THE SKELETON DANCE

As you know, this year we are going to dedicate our Halloween activities to the skeletons. First of all, let´s learn this nice song and their movements: "The skeleton dance". Enjoy it!

AUTUMN IS HERE AT LAST!

Yes! It´s true! Autumn is here at last! These last days we could feel it in the air: the temperature was chillier, it was very windy and the leaves were swirling all around. And today we have the first storm of the season with strong wind. So why don´t we go over the autumn vocabulary? That can help you write your autumn acrostic poem.

A utumn is here!

U mbrellas and raincoats.

T he weather is rainy.

U nder the trees

M any kids eat apples,

N uts, grapes and figs.

Sunday 16 October 2011

Autumn is NOT here!

What is happening with the weather? It´s 15th October and the temperature is really high. The sun shines even more than in the summer and it doesn´t rain at all! We are in the autumn but the autumn is not with us. Anyway it´s a good idea to go over the words related to this time of the year: umbrella - chilly - rain - leaves falling - boots and jackets - brown and yellow...
Besides this is a fantastic season to go to the forest and observe the changes in the nature. What can we do in the autumn? Lots and lots of funny activities. Have a look at this video and you will see... By the way, the music is "Autumn leaves" sung by Nat King Cole.

Sunday 9 October 2011

HEALTHY BREAKFAST

Do you have a healthy breakfast every day? Breakfast is the most important meal of the day because we spend about 9-10 hours sleeping without eating anything at all. That´s why our body loses energy and if we don´t get our strenth back we can´t do all our daily activities. Recent research has shown that kids with a proper breakfast can concentrate better at school and get better results.
But what is a healthy breakfast? A healthy breakfast is composed by fruit, a dairy product (milk, yoghurt) and cereal or bread. So don´t forget it!

Wednesday 14 September 2011

ALL TOGETHER NOW

And now, to make these first days funnier, a fantastic song by The Beatles: "ALL TOGETHER NOW". Sing along once and again, please. Who knows? Maybe we all have to sing it together in the playground...

FRIDAY, 13th

Today is Friday the 13th. In Anglo-Saxon countries it´s a day of bad luck and misfortune. Many people stay inside just waiting for the next day because there are lots of superstitions around this date:

- avoid walking under a ladder
- avoid seeing a black cat crossing your path
- don´t get a haircut or someone you love can die within this year
- avoid the number 13 at all costs
- don´t fly
- don´t do any business

But... what is the point of this? In my opinion, there is no need in worrying. It´s just another normal day! Do you agree?

Monday 9 May 2011

EUROPE DAY

Today, the 9th of May, is Europe Day. Europe is all around us, we might not notice it, but it's in our daily life. Maybe the reason that we don't notice this fact is just simply because we are Europe and everything European is already normal for us, it's ...ours:

- It´s in the nice Belgium chocolate.
- It´s in the aromatic French perfume.
- It´s in the delicious Italian spaghetti we have for dinner.
- It´s in the joyful Spanish dance.
- It´s in the Swiss watches.
- It´s in our football.

EUROPE is US and WE are EUROPE!

- by doing, being connected, watching others,...
- everyday we call, text, chat, blog, email, ...

But don´t forget that all of us are 21st century learners: students, teachers, parents, grandparents, ...

All of us have grown listening to one of these tales. And now that we are old, we can re-read them by our own. Now enjoy watching this tribute to him made by Disney.

THE EARTH HOUR

Yesterday 26th of March, at 8:30 PM , lights switched off around the globe for Earth Hour. Earth Hour started in 2007 in Sydney, Australia when 2.2 million individuals and more than 2,000 businesses turned their lights off for one hour to take a stand against climate change. Only a year later and Earth Hour had become a global movement with more than 50 million people across 35 countries.
What about you? Did you remember to turned off your lights? Our town hall did and here is the video of that moment. First, you can hear the bells of the clock ringing at 8:30 and then you can see how lights go dissappearing little by little. Emotional!

WORLD WATER DAY

Today, 22nd of March, is World Water Day. This year is the 18th anniversary of this event, created by the United Nations in 1993 to celebrate fresh water and to remind us that the majority of the deaths are related to unsafe drinking water. But how can we help as individuals? It´s very important to save water: have quick showers, close the tap meanwhile we brush your teeth, use the flush only when necessary, ...
Every year there is a new logo and this is for 2011:
"Water for cities, responding to the urban challenge".
Now please watch these two advertisements about this event and remember:
SAVE WATER, SAVE LIFES

Everyone is getting ready for Saint Patrick´s Day. Will you remember to wear green that day? And if you find a 4-leaf-clover, this will give you good luck. Besides, if you see a rainbow, go to its end and try to find the pot of gold. But, be careful! A leprechaun will be taking care of it and he is very clever. If you succeed in trapping one, them the pot of gold will be yours. That´s why many children prepare leprechaun´s traps on St. Patrick´s Day Eve. Have a look at these videos and prepare yours...

10 TIPS FOR EXAMS

Unfortunately, tests and exams are a regular part of our school life. But take into account that they are important, but not the end of the world. You can follow these tips to make exams a more valuable, worthwhile and less threatening experience for you:

1.- Have all necessary material with you: pens, pencils, rulers or any other special equipment.
2.- Have a relaxing night before your exams.
3.- Have a healthy breakfast.
4.- Read the entire paper before starting.
5.- Plan your time.
6.- Relax and take a deep breath. Don´t panic even if the exam is very difficult.
7.- Don't leave any questions unanswered.
8.- Don´t spend too much time thinking of an answer: finish your exam first and then you can come back to it.
9.- If you have time at the end, go over your work and add information if necessary.
10.- Maintain a stable energy level: eating foods such as chocolate bars before an exam will give you an energy boost to begin with , and it will be easier for you to concentrate.

If you follow all these steps (and you study hard, of course) I´m sure you will pass your exams.
Now watch this video and see how Mr. Bean apply our tips.

But we have to make a little effort and learn his songs. Here is a link to another blog that contains some of his songs with the lyrics: it´s called "Little Bloggers" and it´s really good. Thanks to Aurora Jove, one of the English teachers at CEIP. Ponte dos Brozos in Arteixo, who runs this blog.

Universal Love is better than egoism, Non-violence is better than violence, and Peace is better than war”.

This year I want you to think about a sentence that explains what peace means for you. You can start writing "Peace is ...". Try to be creative, original and imaginative. Maybe the next slideshow can inspire you. Later, once you get your idea, you are going to make an online poster adding an image to your phrase.
