TOP TEN NEW YEAR´S RESOLUTIONS

New Year's resolutions are peculiar things. At the beginning of each new year, people make resolutions, or plans, on how they can improve on themselves and their lives in the coming year. New Year's Eve has always been a time for looking back to the past, and more importantly, forward to the coming year. It's a time to reflect on the changes we want (or need) to make. That´s why it´s good to write a list of the things you want to achieve during the new year. Have you done your list? Maybe you can get some ideas here: TOP TEN NEW YEAR´S RESOLUTIONS FOR KIDS.

BOXING DAY

Today is BOXING DAY. In Britain, Boxing Day is celebrated on the following day after Christmas Day, that´s it on the 26th of December. It´s a public holiday, so people don´t work today. Traditionally it was the day to open the box containing gifts to give to poor people. And the tradition still continues today. At schools, for instance, pupils put presents in Xmas Boxes to be sent to poorer countries.
But Boxing Day is also the day when families get together: they watch sports, play boardgames or go on walks in the countryside.
And it is also the day when the New Year sales start!
Happy Boxing Day!

TRAFALGAR SQUARE XMAS TREE

Today, December 3rd, a great ceremony will take place in London at 6 pm: the lighting of the Christmas tree. Each year since 1947, a Christmas tree has been given to the people of London from the people of Norway in gratitude for Britain's support for Norway during World War II. For many Londoners the Christmas tree and carol singing in Trafalgar Square signal the countdown to Christmas.
The Trafalgar Square Christmas tree is usually a Norwegian spruce (Picea abies) over 20 metres high and 50-60 years old. It is selected from the forests surrounding Oslo with great care several months, even years, in advance. The Norwegian foresters who look after it describe it fondly as 'the queen of the forest'.
The Christmas tree remains in Trafalgar Square until just before the Twelfth Night of Christmas, when it is taken down for recycling. The tree is chipped and composted, to make mulch.

INTERNATIONAL CHILDREN´S RIGHTS DAY

Today all the countries around the world celebrate the International Children´s Rights Day. On the 20th of November of 1989 the Convention on Children´s Rights was celebrated.
The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child is an international human rights treaty
about young people. The convention is made up of 41 articles about the rights of young people, one article about public awareness and education, and 12 articles on how to monitor, ratify, and enforce the convention. The Convention on the Rights of the Child has been adopted by more countries than any other international human rights treaty. By January 1996, 187 countries had signed or ratified it.
Have a look at these two videos. On the first one, an Irish 7-year-old boy named Adam tells us about Children´s rights. The second one is a brief resume of the main rights. Pay attention. They are your rights...

FRIDAY 13th

Today is Friday, 13th. Do you know what it means? It is said that it is an unlucky day in much of Western Europe, North America and Australia. Many people avoid travelling and signing contracts on Friday the 13th, and there are another fascinating facts about this date:
- Many hotels have no room number 13
- Many buildings do not have a 13th floor.
- Many airplanes do not have a 13th row.
- Many ships will not start a voyage on the 13th, particularly, Friday the 13th.
But this is only superstition. And what about you? Are you superstitious? Well, have a look at this cartoon and think carefully about it. Good luck!

REMEMBRANCE DAY

Remembrance Day is on 11th November. It is a special day to remember all those men and women who were killed during the two World Wars and other conflicts. It is also known as Armistice Day, Veterans Day or Poppy Day, because it´s traditional to wear a red poppy. The poppies are sold by the Royal British Legion to help war veterans.
Remembrance Sunday is held on the second Sunday in November, which is usually the Sunday nearest to 11th November. Special services are held at war memorials and churches all over Britain.
But why is on November the 11th? Because the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month marks the signing of the Armistice, on 11th November 1918, to signal the end of World War One.

THE FALL OF THE BERLIN WALL

Today, November 9th, is the 20th anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall. The Wall was built in 1961 during the Cold War and it divided the city of Berlin in two parts. And for nearly 30 years nobody could crossed it. In 1989 it was breached. Congratulations Germany!

HAPPY BONFIRE NIGHT!

Happy Bonfire Night! Today is November the 5th, also called Guy Fawkes Night or Bonfire Night, as I told you yesterday. Today, British children make a guy with old clothes and stuffed with newspapers. Then, they put it on the top of a bonfire and burn it. There also are fireworks displays in all villages and cities. It´s great fun!
It´s typical to eat roasted potatoes, chestnuts and toffee apples. Yummy!

GUY FAWKES NIGHT

Tomorrow is the 5th of November or Guy Fawkes Night. Many years ago, in 1605, a man called Guy Fawkes planned to blow up the English Parliament and King James l, on the day set for the king to open Parliament. But he was arrested and put into prison. The story is remembered each 5th November when 'Guys' are burned in a celebration known as "Bonfire Night".

Have you thought about doing something after school? Extra-school activities benefit you in lots of ways: they let you enjoy yourself in a fun, stress-free environment, get some exercise, and make friends outside of school. But which one is the best for you? Before you choose one, it´s a good idea to visit them while they are in session so you can get a real idea about the environment, the staff, and the program. When you visit, look for:
- At least 1 adult for every 10-12 children .
- Whether there any "hidden" costs, such as for uniforms, costumes, or equipment.
- Friendly, enthusiastic staff. Feel free to ask for references and check them.
- A space clean, safe, and spacious enough for the activity.
- A calm, but energized environment. Does the activity appear well organized and supervised?
- Happy, enthusiastic kids.
GOOD LUCK, KIDS!
