This week has been full of amazing events! First we attended a talk by Adrian Cruzado, our teacher student. He explained how we can improve our English through music. We also learned about the most famous British pop band of all times, The Beatles and about the musical instruments of a rock band. Besides, we even imagined ourselves being rockstars and we enjoyed Adrián playing his bass in the classroom. Take a look:

CULTURE: English through music

Music is a really useful tool to learn English. Songs are a great source of real life and you can use music to practise different language skills. And, most of all, songs are a fun way to learn English! How? Have you ever had a song stuck in your head all day? Me too! Listening or repeating the lyrics of your favourite songs (even humming them) will improve one or all of the following aspects: 

• Vocabulary: Repeating song lyrics is a  way of  fixing new words and phrases quickly. Think of it as regular word repetition in English classes but with background music.

• Grammar. Listening to English songs can help you master and use certain grammar patterns correctly in everyday conversation.

• Pronunciation and accent. Singing along with your favorite English songs also helps to reduce your accent and learn more about how to link words together when you speak, which greatly improves your pronunciation.

CULTURE: The Beatles

Today we will have a special lesson: Adrián, our teacher student, will talk about a very popular British band: The Beatles. Are you ready?

The Beatles were one of the most successful and influential pop-music groups of the 1960s. They started in Liverpool, England in 1960. The members were John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. Before The Beatles became popular, they played in clubs in Liverpool and Hamburg over three years between 1960 and 1963. Their first single was "Love Me Do", in late 1962. It was a hit and they became popular in the United Kingdom. As they became more popular, the press called the popularity "Beatlemania".  They finally broke up in 1970 because of the pressures of fame. Most people say they are the most successful and influential band in the history of popular music.

Harriet Potter is 14 years old, and she is a witch. She has a brother, Harry Potter, who is very famous.

Harriet goes to school to learn magic, but she has got a problem: she is not good at magic! She doesn´t like studying.

Her first lesson is flying. Harriet can’t fly. She falls on the floor. The teacher is angry with Harriet. Harriet’s friends, Holly Hocus and Polly Pocus, try to help Harriet learn to fly. But she is not good at flying!

The next lesson is potions:

     Eye of newt and toe of frog,

     Hair of cat and tail of dog,

     Double, double, toil and trouble;

     Fire burn and cauldron bubble!

It is a laughter potion. Ha-ha-ha! But Harriet can’t make potions. Her potion goes wrong and she turns her friend into a pig. Oops!

The next lesson is animal magic. Harriet likes animal magic. She has a black and white cat called Louis! Today she must make him dance.

But Harriet is worried. At three o’clock there is an exam…

Harriet’s friends help her to learn magic. They teach her a magic word… Abracadabra!

Now she can fly! Now she can make potions! And now she can do animal magic!

Harriet passes her exam with flying colours. Her teacher, Mrs Dragon, is very happy.
