Hello Winter!

As every year, you are here at last! We can notice it everywhere: in the bare trees, in the grey sky, in the white snow, in the freezing days, ... It´s nice to stay at home these dark Sundays with a good book, a blanket covering your legs, a cup of hot chocolate and good company. But it´s even nicer to go and play in the snow. It´s great fun! Today, 11th of November, is a special day for remembrance. Today is Rememebrance Day, also known as Poppy Day or Veterans Day. Many countries around the world honour the ones who died in wars today because on the 11th hour of the 11th day on the 1tth month of the year 1911, the First World War finished. So many people wears a poppy on the lapel of their jackets and it is observed a 2 minutes´silence. Many wars have taken place during our history and unfortunately many wars are still taking place nowadays. It is important not to forget that wars don´t lead anywhere and many innocents die during the conflicts. Don´t forget it!

BONFIRE NIGHT!

Today is the 5th of November, a very popular date in England known as Bonfire Night or Guy Fawkes´ Day.
In 1605 a group of traitors, ruled by a man called guy Fawkes, tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament with the purpose of killing the king James I. They introduced 36 barrels of gunpowder under the cellars of the building, but they were catched and sent into prison. Since then people celebrate that day with bonfires and fireworks displays. Children make a guy with straw and old clothes and go to ask for "money for the Guy". It is also very common to eat jacket potatoes and toffee apples.

What is happening with the weather? It´s 15th October and the temperature is really high. The sun shines even more than in the summer and it doesn´t rain at all! We are in the autumn but the autumn is not with us. Anyway it´s a good idea to go over the words related to this time of the year: umbrella - chilly - rain - leaves falling - boots and jackets - brown and yellow...

Do you have a healthy breakfast every day? Breakfast is the most important meal of the day because we spend about 9-10 hours sleeping without eating anything at all. That´s why our body loses energy and if we don´t get our strenth back we can´t do all our daily activities. Recent research has shown that kids with a proper breakfast can concentrate better at school and get better results.
But what is a healthy breakfast? A healthy breakfast is composed by fruit, a dairy product (milk, yoghurt) and cereal or bread. So don´t forget it!

At the begining just two actors were on the stage but, after a while, some of us went up there and played a role. It was so funny! Today is the International Children´s Book Day. It´s celebrated on the 2nd of April every year to conmemorate the birth of a famous writer for kids: Hans Christian Andersen. He wrote hundreds of marvellous stories. I´m sure you know many of them: "The little mermaid", "Thumbeline", "The Snow Queen", "The emperor´s new clothes", "The ugly duckling", ... All of us have grown listening to one of these tales. And now that we are old, we can re-read them by our own. Now enjoy watching this tribute to him made by Disney.

THE EARTH HOUR

Yesterday 26th of March, at 8:30 PM , lights switched off around the globe for Earth Hour. Earth Hour started in 2007 in Sydney, Australia when 2.2 million individuals and more than 2,000 businesses turned their lights off for one hour to take a stand against climate change. Only a year later and Earth Hour had become a global movement with more than 50 million people across 35 countries.
What about you? Did you remember to turned off your lights? Our town hall did and here is the video of that moment. First, you can hear the bells of the clock ringing at 8:30 and then you can see how lights go dissappearing little by little. Emotional!

10 TIPS FOR EXAMS

Unfortunately, tests and exams are a regular part of our school life. But take into account that they are important, but not the end of the world. You can follow these tips to make exams a more valuable, worthwhile and less threatening experience for you:

1.- Have all necessary material with you: pens, pencils, rulers or any other special equipment.
2.- Have a relaxing night before your exams.
3.- Have a healthy breakfast.
4.- Read the entire paper before starting.
5.- Plan your time.
6.- Relax and take a deep breath. Don´t panic even if the exam is very difficult.
7.- Don't leave any questions unanswered.
8.- Don´t spend too much time thinking of an answer: finish your exam first and then you can come back to it.
9.- If you have time at the end, go over your work and add information if necessary.
10.- Maintain a stable energy level: eating foods such as chocolate bars before an exam will give you an energy boost to begin with , and it will be easier for you to concentrate.

If you follow all these steps (and you study hard, of course) I´m sure you will pass your exams.

Today, February the 8th, is Safer Internet Day. It is an event organised by Insafe to promote safer and more responsible use of online technology and mobile phones, especially among children and young people across the world.It is always celebrated on the second day of the second week of the second month of every year – this edition falls on Tuesday 8 February 2011 (today).

In 2010 Safer Internet Day was celebrated through over 500 events in 65 countries all over the world.
The topic for 2011 is "our virtual lives" around the slogan "It's more than a game, it's your life".
So don´t forget the Internet Safety Rules we have learned at the begining of this school year and watch this video.

Guess what? Next 21st of February we will go to a Dani Griffin´s concert. Remember that he is an American musician who plays the drums with Fito y los Fitipaldis. Besides he is the author of many songs in some English textbooks for kids. And mainly he is very very funny. We are going to have a great time that day. Sure!

It is observed on January 30 every year, on the anniversary of the death of Mahatma Gandhi, one of the peace makers. Its basic message is: “Universal Love, Non-violence and Peace. Universal Love is better than egoism, Non-violence is better than violence, and Peace is better than war”.

This year I want you to think about a sentence that explains what peace means for you. You can start writing "Peace is ...". Try to be creative, original and imaginative. Yes! Today is the 1st of December. That means that it´s time to open the windows of the advent calendar one more year and see the surprises behind each one. Remember that an advent calendar is a special calendar to count the days until Christmas Day. SAINT ANDREW´S DAY

Today, November the 30th, is Saint Andrew´s Day, patron saint of Scotland. So Scots all over the world celebrate their national day with traditional food, music (bagpipes) and dancing. It is also a bank holiday.

But do you know many things about Scotland? Scotland is one of the countries of The United Kingdom. It´s located in the north. It´s capital city is Edinbourgh and it is also the country of Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster, the bagpipes and the kilts.

The Scotish flag is the cross of St. Andrew´s, also known as the Saltire, a white cross on a blue background.

The Scotish emblem is a thistle. A legend says that many years ago, a group of Scots were sleeping in a field when a group of Vikings came to attack them. But one of the Vikings stood up on a thistle and its prickles penetrated through to his foot and made him shout with pain. His cries woke up the sleeping Scots and saved them. From this day, the thistle became the emblem of Scotland.

Today, November the 20th, is the Universal Children´s Day. This year we celebrate the 21st anniversary of this important day for you, dear kids.

In 2006, UNICEF released the "Top Ten Cartoons for Children´s Rights" to conmemorate the 15th anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. This initiative wanted to inform people all around the world about the children´s rights. All the spots are non-verbal in order to focus on the message, regardless the language. They were made in 32 different countries and last 30 seconds. Some of them won pretigious rewards.
During the next days, I will publish them one by one so that you can watch them all. Let´s start with the 1st right: IDENTITY (Iran)

BONFIRE NIGHT

Today, November 5th, people in Great Britain celebrate Bonfire Night or Guy Fawkes´ Day. Guy Fawkes was one of a group of Catholics who tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament in 1605 to kill the king James I. But they failed: they put 40 barrels of gunpowder in the cellars of the Houses of Lords but they were discovered and arrested. This is known as the Gunpowder Plot. Since then, and to remember it, people light bonfires with a guy on top representing Guy Fawkes. There are also fireworks displays. It´s traditional to eat jacket potatoes, toffee apples, potato pie, ...

It´s celebrated in many countries of North and South America and also in Spain, along with its National Day. It commemorates the arrival of Cristopher Columbus to the New World on the 12th of October of 1492. This video shows you the preparations and the trip that he made.

Have you ever heard about CONKERS? During the months of September and October, a favourite playground game is CONKERS. There are two players. Each player has got a conker or chestnut hanging on its string. Players take turns at hitting the oponent´s conker. The game goes on in turns until one of the two conkers is completely destroyed.

When you find your first conker of the autumn you must say this:

"Oddly oddly onker,

my first conker"

This ensures good fortune in the coming season. So... what are you waiting for? Go and find yours!
